Christmas In June for SC Special Education

June 24, 2011

If it wants to continue getting money from the Federal government SC has to spend millions more on Special Education.  Turns out, for years,  the state has underspent in that department. As a result, the federal government says unless it spends more SC will get $111 million fewer Federal dollars a year!

Now the state is making a mad dash to dump money into Special Education by the end of June. State Superintendent Mick Zais is expected to distribute  $75 million dollars to districts across the state by next week.

Where do you think that money should be used in Special Education and why?

Recently a local school district chose to eliminate a classroom for preschool development. This classroom provided preschool developmental service to children ages 3 to 5 in a small group environment. This class had an excellent teaching staff and made a big impact on the life of these children with Autism, Down Snydrome, and other disabilities. I hope the school district can use this money to place this classroom back at this school. The child who attended this class will now be on a bus for at least 25-40 minutes to get to their new school. All tricounty area school district need to hire and fund ABA therapy for all students on the Autism Spectrum.

How much ($ amount) would be ideal for ABA therapy. $75M sounds like a lot of money. But is it really when it comes to special needs?
